According to a survey by the University of Manchester's Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), One in four people said they suffered bullying at work in the last five years. Bullying and harassment in the workplace is painful for staff and expensive for organisations.

It increases absenteeism and staff turnover and reduces the quality of work and staff morale. It is sometimes mistaken for strong management.

Small and non-profit organisations are not immune to the disastrous consequences of bullying and harassment, so it is imperative to identify and deal with its causes, and have effective procedures to dealing with bullying and harassment within the organisation.
